Question:
I want to become a vegan. I mainly want to do it for health reasons( I’m over weight) and it seems like a great life choice. Thankfully, my parents are 100% behind me and supportive of this choice. But how do I become vegan? Are there any books, recipes, or straight-up advice you could give me for my new life choice? Thanks!

  1. ◄▲▼►Veganism is about Animal Rights▲

If you plan on consuming eggs and milk “Diet for a Small Planet” book, gives you the explanation as to why. you need to get a combination of amino acids for protein.
Calories are what counts and plenty of exercise.

  2. dont become vegan, its not a way to lose weight… becoming vegan means that you are against eating a certain thing because you do not believe in eating that. I recommend just to shape up get healthy…. maby try a cleanse, i mean i do the cayenne peper cleanse once a year, its only a month, but i recommend startng off with something a little easier.

  3. I highly recommend reading “The Kind Diet” by Alicia Silverstone. She totally ropes you in to a vegan diet without sounding preachy, gives you the options of dipping your toe in without judging yourself, or moving forward with more commitment. She covers all the bases as to why avoiding meat and dairy is good for your health, and the environment, and all the furry little animals.
She also goes into a “macrobiotic” type vegan diet, if you are interested and have mastered vegan and are comfortable with it.
My other favorite books are Modern Day Macrobiotics by Simon Brown (not entirely vegan, but tons of recipes that don’t involve meat, though some fish), and Hip Chicks Guide to Macrobiotics, a fun read about balancing food, your body, and nature.
Vegan is a great choice, just stay informed and make sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need. Removing dairy is a great place to start, especially if you have weight issues. If you need recommendations for vegan substitutes for milks, butter, etc, you’ll find no shortage of options there. Vegan doesn’t have to be restrictive, just look at it as an adventure, and try lots of new grains and veggies you never did before. It is actually lots of fun.

  4. Hello. Welome to veganism! Being a vegan really isn’t as daunting or difficult as it first seems. The longer you stick with it the more you realize how simple it is to live without animal products.
In my opinion the first step is to find yourself a milk replacement. We use milk in so many things, from coffee to cereal, so finding a substitute is a good place to start. Soya milk is my favorite, and had the advantage that it can be fortified wit nutrients like iron, b12 and calcium.
For each meal, make sure you’re getting a portion of protein, complex carbs and fruit or vegetables. Generally these will come from natural produce such as brown rice, beans, nuts + seeds, potatoes, tofu etc.
And yes, you can get vegan chocolate!
Perhaps for the first couple of weeks you could write yourself out a meal plan just to make sure you’re getting everything you need.
Sites like this are also a great help if you have any specific questions.
It’ll get easier the longer you keep it up for, and after a while it really won’t take any effort at all.

  5. If you are new to this vegan thing than you should start with healthy stuff like organic peanutbutter on cellery. (delicious by the way) Then work your way out of eating meat. A good method some people use is this: Have your parents fix a vegetarian meal and serve it to you. Make sure you have a blind fold on your eyes to have your stomach decide if you like it and not if it looks discusting. Because if your parents serve you something that looks too healthy and discusting, you wont eat it. But if you don’t know what it looks like because of your blind fold, than you will eat it even if it looks bad. But obviously you wont know what it looks like again

  6. Just google ‘vegan recipes.’ You’ll have more ideas than you can shake a spoon at.

And… if it’s any incentive … there are a lot more women than men who are vegetarian, so you might find more help than you expect.

    Good luck!

  7. Vegan isn’t always the way to go. It can be very unhealthy, meat has the protein your body needs. Plus you can eat meat while losing weight, just burn off more calories than you consume and you will start seeing numbers drop off. Hope this helps
