Question:
I went vegan in March for animal welfare, environmental, and health reasons, in that order. When I told my parents, they were pretty supportive, and looked forward to eating the occasional vegan meal with me since they both need to lose weight and lower their cholesterol. Recently, my mom even told me that she wants to check “Food, Inc.” (the film that made me turn vegan) out of the library, but she hasn’t done it yet. I don’t preach about veganism, and I haven’t told them much of what I’ve learned about the health benefits of the vegan diet. They both love animal products, and I don’t want to shove my choices down their throats.
That said, I am worried about their health. I want them both to live long, healthy, happy lives, and I want them to watch their grandkids grow up. My grandpa died of his second heart attack at 57. I’m not terribly interested in history repeating itself.
I bought my parents a copy of The Engine 2 Diet for Christmas. From what I’ve skimmed, the book doesn’t mention animal welfare or environmental concerns at all, and refers to the diet plan as “plant-based,” not vegan.
I’m starting to wonder whether or not I should give them the book. I don’t want to annoy them or seem like a vegangelical. What should I do?
