Some meat eaters seem to get this confused a lot so let me repeat: Onision is vegetarian not vegan. The two groups have much in common, which is why they often support each other, but also possess some very clear philosophical differences.
Question:
Recently I have decided to become Vegan. I decided this because of health reasons and beliefs. My parents and boyfriend aren’t real supportive. They aren’t eating meat and such in front of me but they keep saying it’s a phase and I’m being rediculous! How can I show them that I have finally found something I am serious about and feel real strong towards? I am happy for once and feel that I have finally found what I’m meant to be.
Question:
Hi, I’m fourteen and I really strive towards being vegetarian or vegan. My main problem is that my family doesn’t support me like I need them to. Everyone in my family eats meat, and they make fun of me when I say I’m not eating meat, and it gets incredibly awkward. It’s hard, and because of it, I’ve been on and off vegetarianism for a couple years now. I want to do this for the animals, but how can I when I barely get support from the people who love me the most? I know they’re trying to say something supportive, I can see it in their eyes, but could they at least be kinder about it? Any tips on what I should do or say, and how to be a vegan/vegetarian?
I’m determined to be vegetarian or vegan, so my age won’t matter. I’m responsible enough to take vitamins. And I am mainly looking at vegetarianism, i don’t know why I put ‘vegan’ in the question.
Question:
I became a vegetarian a little less than a month ago to protest animal exploitation, and at first my mom wasn’t very supportive. She threw the usual arguments at me (not enough protein, vitamin deficiencies, etc…) Amazingly, she decided to do a little research online and found out that vegetarian diets can be more healthy than omnivorous ones, so she’s decided to partially join me in being an ovo-lacto vegetarian. (She still eats gelatin and animal-rennet cheese, though.)
Well, lately she has been super-supportive of my choice. Shes actually helped me cook tofu and bought me special foods. Since she seemed to accept it, I have been dropping not-so-subtle hints that I would like to be vegan. She keeps telling me “not yet–just wait a while until you’re used to being vegetarian”. Well, today I told her I was vegan from now on, and she seemed to think it was a joke. I kept telling her I was serious, and she kept laughing. I’m pretty sure she still doesn’t believe me, so my game plan is to refuse to eat any animal products tomorrow and every day after then until she does believe me. Oh, by the way, I’m 14. I can’t get a job and I don’t get enough allowance to buy my own food. I might not be eating well for a week or two
How long do you think it will take for her to accept it? Do you think she ever will accept it?
**Please don’t comment on how unhealthy vegan diets are for growing teens. I know for a fact that it is completely possible to be healthy as a vegan… I had a good friend who was very healthy and vegan throughout his teens.
Actually, Vetis213, I believe that it is ethically wrong to eat flesh. Regardless of how much of an impact I am having on the meat industry, I know that I am making a difference. The average meat-eater consumes more than 50 animals per year. That 50 animals that weren’t eaten this year.
To 14-year old black scholar: I’ve seen some of your answers… aren’t you the one who drinks breast milk? Um…interesting… I did expressly ask you not to post an answer explaining why being vegan is unhealthy, which is EXACTLY what you did.
Aww, don’t delete your answer! Now other people won’t know what I was talking about! Hmmm, I suppose I should load my diet with cigarettes, saturated fat, and cholesterol, then? No! Sorry, no offense intended, but I will go with science rather than some random lunatic on the internet.
Here’s an easy to make French fry recipe with a little twist. The curry seasoning really brings out the flavor of the sweet potato in a surprisingly good way. We bake them as well to cut down on the fat. I also prefer olive oil of course.. let me know what you think
