The Best of Vegan Cooking

  1. I have hundreds of cookbooks and most of them are vegan. I even wrote one myself. The Best of Vegan Cooking is bound to become a series as Priscilla Feral and Friends of Animals pulled together not only her own recipes but asked others to join the book as well. This is what community is and thus expands the offerings beyond one person’s vision. I love this book and refer to it often. What’s for dinner tonight? Pick any page! If you know someone on the fence about how to cook vegan, please give them this book! And, ask to be invited to dinner! I am waiting for The Best of Vegan II.

  2. I had the opportunity to test some of the recipes in this cookbook. And to the delight of my family and co-workers, they had the chance to taste the creations.

A few of the favorites are the Carmelized Leek and Shiitake Risotto, Manhattan Vegetable Chowder and Irish Stew.

The Mango Tango Flan is truly unbelievable and bursting with flavor. The Two-Layer Thanksgiving Cheesecake was delicious, combining a recipe from Dining With Friends with another layer of flavor. And if you are a fan of coconut, the Coconut Cake is delightful.

I have to admit that I thought my pasta e fagioli was the best – ever. That is until I prepared the recipe in this cookbook – Aunt Trish’s Pasta e Fagioli. I have made it numerous times since originally testing the recipe and it has become one of my favorite stand-by recipes.

Recently I made the Cauliflower Steak with Quinoa and was thrilled when my 17 year old son gobbled it up, even though cauliflower is not one of his favorites. In this recipe it was perfect over the flavorful quinoa. I will definitely be preparing this one again.

The Chefs who contributed recipes have helped to make this a worthwhile addition to anyone’s culinary library. The recipes are varied and each one that I had the privilege of testing, shows the tastefulness and variety that makes vegan recipes such a joy to prepare and indulge in.

  3. The Best of Vegan Cooking is more than just a title; it’s a fact. Friends of Animals president Priscilla Feral’s sequel to 2005′s excellent Dining With Friends could be subtitled “Recipes From Friends.” Cooking takes on 84 recipes that represent cuisines from around the globe, a number of which are donated from renowned chefs. Try this menu on for size: Manhattan Vegetable Chowder (Trish Sebben-Kruka), Spicy Barbecued Tofu Triangles (Bryant Terry), Baby Artichokes Provençal Style (Mark Bittman), and leave room for Charlie Trotter’s Mignardises (Chocolate Truffles). The Best of Vegan Cooking is a stellar effort, broad in scope, compact in size, and user-friendly. It’s a perfect book to share with both vegan and non-veg friends.

  4. I was somewhat disappointed in this cookbook, after all the glowing reviews I read. Several of the dishes look great, but they are not as easy as I expected or have unusual ingredients. I have made just one dish that was good, but not terrific and a little to weird for my kids. I am looking forward to making one of the ice creams – they look great!

  5. This is one of the worst vegan cookbooks that I have bought. The recipes are either obvious or too complicated. The pictures are the best thing about the book. A lot better vegan cookbooks exist–buy those!
