One of my favorite cookbooks where I can always find a recipe I know will become a constant in my kitchen. Jo’s recipes are easy to follow, the ingredients are right there in my supermarket and the results always delicious. I recommend this book to all cooks.

I love that this book is so full of information.. Alternatives to dairy, Alternatives to Eggs, Ingredients that may be new to you, Getting started are all chapters in the beginning of the book. Also covered is how you can help to improve the life of farm animals. Oh, did I mention it is written in conjunction with Farm Sanctuary? Yep, and I love that the book has stories through out the book about animals they have saved and are now living at the “Farm”.
There are lots of different types of recipes in here and most don’t use ingredients that I don’t already have in my house- so that is awesome. I hate getting a cookbook and finding that I don’t have a single thing in my house to complete any of the recipes.. Not so with this book!
We have already tried the Gee Whiz Spread with great success and the Barbecue Buffalo Zings.. Yummy. This cookbook has recipes that anyone would like whether or not they are vegan. So I believe it is a great resource to all cooks out there. Do you have family members who are not vegan? This is the book to get them. You can tell them it is so they have recipes to cook when you come over but really they will love it too!

I am so in love with this cookbook. The recipes are very yummy and simple to prepare. There are no mile long ingredient lists– she does a great job at keeping things simple. ((simple = affordable))
All of the recipes I have made so far have been hits. Within two weeks of checking this book out from the library, I found several new “staples” for my family. One of our favorites is the Barbeque Tempeh. It is so easy to make and oh so tasty, that we have it at least two times per week! I did find that I like it better with prepared mustard instead of mustard powder.
So far we have tried the Sweet & Sour Tempeh, the Farmhouse Stew (soooo delish), the Hearty Cabbage Casserole (OMG its so good!) and the Butternutty Chowder (you have to let it cook for a while after adding the peanut butter, it is soooo good once the peanut butter homogenizes with the squash!!). All were very very tasty, and they were very very simple.
This book has helped our family make the transition from vegetarian to vegan. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for vegan recipes that you can make on a regular basis, without spending hours in the kitchen.

I think that this book is very cute and I love the little commentaries on the Farm Sanctuary as well as the “veggie”fied sayings. I wish this book was more advanced. I’ve been a vegetarian for 10 years and I could care less about mock meat dishes. Morning star farms and my local chinese restaurant can satisfy any of my occasional texture cravings! I really was disappointed that there was not as much variety in the ingredients. This is a great book for teenagers, or someone who is not kitchen savvy, or new to the veg life-style. A lot of the sauces in this book I’ve been making for years just by intuition. The original book was recommended by a veg shop owner. I thought this sequel would knock my socks off. No offense to Jo. (I see that you read this review section) Try creating something a little more sharp for those of us who can actually cook! If folks really want to invest in a GREAT cookbook, pay $5 for The Garden of Earthly Delights Gormet Vegetarian Cooking by Shea MacKenzie. It’s the best cookbook EVER! Not all the recipies are vegan, but I’m sure that you can easily substitute alternatives for butter, milk, and cheese.

I’ve been a vegetarian for 16 years because of animal rights issues, and I greatly admire all the work that Farm Sanctuary does rescuing animals. I’ve been searching for a good vegan cookbook that knows how to use wholefoods and herbs and spices to replace dairy in down home cooking. I purchased “Vegan Vittles” recently and was very excited to see all the easy vegan recipes, but was surprised at the over use of the supplement NUTRITIONAL YEAST in so many recipes. I tried the, “Chickpeas a la King” recipe and while it tasted good, my daughter and I suffered severe gastrointestinal problems afterwards. A couple days later I tried another recipe, “Cheez Please Soup” and again my daughter and I got severely sick. Since then I’ve been searching the internet for vegan cookbooks. What I’ve found is a big BUZZ about using NUTRITIONAL YEAST as a substitute for everything in vegan cooking.
NUTRITIONAL YEAST IS A SUPPLEMENT THAT NOT ALL PEOPLE CAN TOLERATE and shouldn’t be used as an ingredient in a recipe, because it can cause GASTROINTESTINAL PROBLEMS. I fear that a lot of people that want to become vegetarian or vegan will give up and go back to eating animal products once they get sick from these recipes. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE WRITE A VEGAN COOKBOOK THAT DOESN’T USE NUTRITIONAL YEAST IN THEIR RECIPES?
