Question:
I realise it has little to do with animal consumption but rather a healthy lifestyle. I’m a vegetarian and straight edge, just curious on your guys thoughts.
Shaif, I beg to differ. I think it’s a moral and lifestyle choice.
I am well aware of what straight edge means, thanks for your input but I believe your arguement is pointless.
If I am someone who is sXe and compare my health to someone who is an abuser or just a user of recreational drugs and alcohol then I am very likely to be healthier than them due to the damage those things do to your body.
Abstaining from letting those things have the potential to damage my body would surely make me a healthier person than if I were one of those mentioned right?
Yes. Oh yeah, I always thought it was pwned.
Shaif, you offer a good arguement. Thank you.
However I have a few points to make. I agree with you that people who drink, use drugs [for pain] or have casual sex in moderation still have the ability to be healthy. I did mention in my last post that ‘recreational drugs’ were the things which cause damage to your body. These are the drugs which do not occur naturally and therefore give you an artificial and only momentary feeling of relief. I never said anything about sex having a negative effect on the body. I actually believe it is a more loosley held value within the sXe community now as times have progressed. As for alcohol being good for the body, its the same arguement as saying eating meat every week is good for the body. There are other options. Yes this lifestyle choice seems to be dominated by moral issues. Generally I believe this abstinence from drugs and alcohol is beneficial to ones health as they are not using anything which may have the potential to damage their body

I am a vegan, and I drink etc. I am no primarily a vegan for my health, or for animal rights. Both of those things play a role in my decision, but I am a vegan for human rights. I think the slaughter and meat industry is extremely destructive to humanity in general. I think people who are straight edge are fine in my book, as long as they aren’t preachy about their lifestyle, as I strive to be about my veganism.
If you want to make that choice, do it to it.

Amazing! Haha. I actually think that of all of the lifestyles and groups out there Vegetarian/Vegan and Straight Edge are the most complementary and the most accepting of each other.
When I first became a vegetarian I was getting put down by nearly everyone I knew about my choice. Then one day I came across a Straight Edge Vegetarian band and there songs comforted me and let me know it was ok to not eat meat.
I think that both of them get a lot of flack from the rest of society and so they can relate. And I think the morals and ethics go hand in hand!

It’s good that you care about your health. :]
I am a vegetarian. But in NO way am I straight edge. I use light and hard drugs both pretty heavily. I don’t consider marijuana a drug like others though. Many many people use marijuana and it helps them with stress. I don’t consider it a hazard to your health, or at least so much that you need to worry about. No more than eating hunnybuns everyday or some other food that is unhealthy you know? There is a point in where you switch over into abuse of the herb and it probably shouldn’t be used so much (tho I happily abuse it XD). But I don’t care about abusing it because I also smoke cigarettes and smoke other drugs. My health is not something I tie into being a vegitarian though, thats just my morals of animal abuse and such.

i’ve been a vegetarian ever since the mad cow disease and the bird flu. i saw a movie how meat was made and omg! it was so disgusting, i just quit eating meat. i eat a little dairy product but like vege cheese. and soy peanut butter. but i am not like a pure vegetarian but enough to call myself one.

I admire anyone who can stick to it.
I was actually thinking about trying it in 2009. The only problem is that I drink and party. Not a lot, but enough (if you know what I mean).
I think it’s something that’s totally doable, though. I have found that when I go on alcohol fasts and really commit to using my juicer, I feel a lot better. Not allowing those impurities in the body will do wonders for the spirt and soul.
The other aspects of straight edge way of living (like no casual sex, limiting negativity) are also good.

I’m a vegetarian. I still drink and party. I just dont eat meat. I dont think it impacts the straight edge philosophy.
