Question:
Okay so i am new to this whole vegan thing and have been living off frozen morning star, boca, and PB&J
I am starting to stock up on “real food”.
so i guess i will need things like new Milk, Cheese, Eggs, Chocolate, and Meat substitutes.
I already figured i will need Nutritional yeast ,Seitan,Vitamin B12, Tofu, and maybe Miso and Tempeh.
Is there anything else i need to pick up from the store? Is there anything i listed hat i dont need?
And I know the differance between Silk, firm and Exra firm tofu but what kind(s) do you use the most and how long does it last before it goes bad (how long is its shelf life)??
Im 15 and dont have a really supportive family but my mom is taking me to a health food store so i need to get everything i need at one shot because i cant go back to the store till maybe a week or 10 days.
Thank you
)))
Health food store:
-TVP (textured vegetable protein)
- nutritional yeast
Regular store:
- Dried beans, canned beans
- rice
- soy milk, rice milk
- greens (if your family doesn’t eat them already)
- fake meats
- peanut butter
- nuts and seeds.
- Tofu. contrary to popular belief v/v’s don’t live on tofu every day, some of us don’t even like it that much.
Like the poster above, I always have extra firm or firm refrigerated tofu on hand. Most brands have well over a month “shelf” life, so you can usually afford to stock up on extra if you won’t be able to get to the store. It freezes well, changing the texture a bit, which most people consider a plus (makes it more chewy “meaty”). I also usually have some soft silken tofu in aspetic packs for the cupboard, in case I get a hankering to make some “pudding” or deserty stuff.
The tempeh I get is in the frozen section and has a very long lifespan.
I always have on hand a variety of frozen veggies as well – broccoli, cauliflower, frozen peppers, etc. I try to stock up on my own local stuff when they’re in season, but most flash frozen veggies are great anyway, if you put the carbon footprint aside
. With frozen veggies you can easily whip up a stir fry, add to scrambled tofu, bake a casserole, add to pasta sauce, etc.
Canned or dry beans are inexpensive and can be used in a million ways. I make a new “dip” every week with a different bean – eg. hummus from chickpeas, white bean spread, or chopped up tomatoes, peppers, etc with whole black beans. It’s an easy way to get a snack that’s loaded with nutrition and protein, low cal, etc. Just add crackers, rice cakes, or something like that. Most homemade dips like this will last a week in the fridge if sealed. Depending on what you can get at your grocery store, sometimes the health food store has bean varieties that are interesting or cheaper
Good luck on your adventrue!
Always have extra firm tofu around the house. The brands is not always that relevant. It is very rare I ever use any other type of tofu.
This is good for scrambles, stiry fry, salads, etc.. Virtually what you would normaly use meat in, you can substitute tofu. It is a staple for sure.
Tempeh is nice to in all of the above and makes great sandwhiches. (try making a tempeh reuben..yum!)
Always have rice and beans on hand too. Easy to make in bulk and a good snack.
Good luck and good for your mom taking you. That is supportive!
Oh let me add tofu lasts a long time. There will be an expiration date on the package. You can by alot at once, and freeze tofu in package for later use as well.
tofu? i keep pepperoni around my house.
My mum usually buy silk tofu, for her she can cook it lots of ways. For soup, stir fry. Maybe for deep frying she uses firm tofu. I’m not really sure about the shelf life..maybe a week? Or you can check the expiry date.
